An apple please

April 18, 2007

Yevegeny spent much of the last two years in the Gobi desert. He was eager to return to his homeland. After a five day trip back he was finally in the place he called home. For two years Yevegeny dreamt of eating an apple, and as there were no apples in the Gobi, Yevegeny was very excited to have one as soon as he arrived.

Bad news all over, there were no apples, so he searched everywhere. He could not find one. Then the locals explained there had been a protest against apples, so there were not going to be apples anytime soon. Yevegeny did not give up, and searched in the darkest parts of town. Suddenly he arrived to a dark alley and he saw a small sign on the wall: Fresh apples. He rushed into the place and asked: An apple please. The man on the counter said that  there were no apples in stock, and that if he wanted one he needed to leave a deposit. Yevegeny immediately left the deposit and waited for two whole days.

He was back in the clandestine store and asked for his apple. The man opened a box and took a huge watermelon out. “Sorry no apples, but the watermelons are delicious.” Yevegeny started to cry, so as the man on the counter. Few minutes later Yevegeny was seen at a travel agency. He had booked a ticket to Washington State.

He arrived to Washington State, and headed to the Apple fields. He saw an old lady and asked: An apple please. The old lady replied: Which kind. Yevegeny did not know which kind of apple, so he just pointed the closest he could see. Oh no, those are for commercial purposes. The old lady said. Yevegeny then asked where he could get an apple. To this the old lady did not answer.

So he headed for the city, where he finally saw a place that sold only apples. He arrived and asked for a red apple. $3.50. Said the salesman. Yevegeny searched and searched, he had only $3.50 left, but that was for his ticket back to the airport. He gazed at the apple, juicy, tasty apple.

An apple please.

Carl was a member of the circle clan. He had great goals, and dreamt of becoming a great musician. So his carrier started. Time passed and everyone knew that Carl would be a fine musician. Everything was wonderful for Carl, until one day he entered a plateau, he could make no progress. Frustrated he asked everyone why it was he was in a standstill, no one wanted to tell Carl the truth. Until one day, his mentor told him that members of the circle clan would eventually end up where they started. Carl was very disappointed, and sad.

Carl woke up one day and regained momentum, he was off to become a great musician.

Fame v2.0

April 12, 2007

Today being famous is too overrated, it is a thing of the past, who wants to be famous anyways. Things have changed lately, were being not famous is the issue, how can I not be famous?

There are millions of people that enjoy some fame, people who do not even know they are famous. Youtubers, myspacers, facebookers, and hard to say it bloggers. All of these species have ways to become famous. Why wanna be like Cameron, or Justin, when you can be youtuber with 40 million viewers, or new sensation rockstar at myspace.

The beauty is that it is relatively costless to be famous these days. But the tragedy is that also it does not pay at all, well few get payed, but who’s counting.

So these is for all of you who are famous and don’t know it, who did not go half the world to gain fame, who are not payed for being a great celebrity. For all of you whose fame inspired millions, who made celebrities not wanting to be celebrities anymore.

Live and let

April 12, 2007

There are various saying about life, “live and lets” is a famous saying with various endings, live and let die, live and let live, live and let us go, etc, etc. I have come to realize that the crucial meaning of that saying is not what comes at the end, but the live and let. So next time you’re about to say “live and let whatever, just stop at live and let. If you do not agree, well live and let live.

The fellow

April 12, 2007

Everyday after my training sessions I returned home. My place consisted on two bedrooms, kitchen and living room. Strangely everyday one of the bedrooms was locked, and some noises came from the inside, human noises. You may be wondering why did I let that happen? First of all the door was locked so I did not know for sure who it was. Secondly it was interesting to imagine who or whom it was that was inside that room. And finally it gave me something to think about while I was at work.

But that day was different. The door was unlocked. The noises were still there. So I sat down and turned the TV on, I thought this would distract me, but it did not. As the minutes went by, my mind was deciding whether to open the door or not. I went through various theories, created new one’s, remembered similar scenarios in popular culture. Curiosity was killing me and the cat next to me.

The noises were getting more intense.I turned the vloume at its highest without any use, for I could not hear the TV. The cat started to get nervous, maybe he could hear it too. “What should I do?” I asked the cat. But he did not replied, something that did not surprise me. What was I to do? Open that door or not? Discover who was the mysterious individual inside that room or keep it as a mystery?

I imagined every possible scenario, and none satisfied me, none!

Finally I turned to cat, “Cat I will open that door right now, with or without your approval!” Cat gazed at me and in some ways he approved, I knew he did. I got up headed to the door. I placed my hand on the handle, took one deep breath and turned the handle. Nothing it did not open! How? What? The lock was on again!

So I come everyday after my training sessions, and wonder who is inside that room. I will never forget that day, the day I almost discovered who it was that was living under my roof, that mysterious individual who will remain a mystery to me and to all of us, unless, of course, the mysterious individual.

The shouter

April 11, 2007

There he sat, in a glorious bench, facing the ocean, nothing could be more pleasant.  It was what he needed, peace, and intimacy. He could enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing towards the rocks, the birds singing beautiful lullabies, the grass, well the grass. It had been a long time since Roger felt this way, he would not trade it for anything; just living the dream.

Ista e uni estanto! Ista e uni estanto! Roger heard from afar. Suddenly he turned to search where that horrible sound was coming from. Immediately he saw an old man running towards him. He then searched around, and as he was the only person in the zone, he deducted that the old man was running precisely towards him.

Sir are you all right? asked Roger various times. The old man started running in circles around Roger screaming: Ista e uni estanto! At first Roger thought the old man would eventually run off, but after a few minutes he continued running and screaming. In a sudden movement, Roger stood up, and stopped the old man. Can I help you old man? Said Roger with a powerful tone. Ista e uni estanto? Asked the old man. What are you saying? Ista e uni estanto. Whispered the old man, and left.

Roger stood perplexed. He could hear nothing but the words of that old man inside his head: Ista e uni estanto.

Sitting in benches would not be the same for Roger anymore.

Run and think

April 11, 2007

When one starts running, why is his/her purpose? Normally one runs and thinks, but often not much people remember what they thought while running. I think therefore I run. I run therefore I think. Think runs while not running. So why think while running?

Ralph and I

April 11, 2007

Ralph and I did virtually everything together, and it was not because we wanted to, but because we were stranded in an Island. It had been five years since that crash, and never heard of the outside world, now we were at our world; rulers of our world. You see, whoever you are, crab, anchovi, fish, ruling can be really fun, but when it is only one person you rule, it can be kind of frustrating.

We decided to split and create our own kingdoms. In the beginning everything went smoothly well; trade was at its peak, border patrols without inconveniences and so on. Our kingdoms lived in harmony, Ralph’s and I’s.

Suddenly one day, I received a report from the local intelligence that Ralph was about to lunch a surprise attack on our kingdom. I did not hesitate, and right away prepared the army for eminent invasion. BUM! The first attack, and the second, and so on, soon I realized my army could not hold against Ralph’s.

The war was over, and I was defeated. Ralph took over and my kingdom ceased to exist.

Time passed slowly, and Ralph’s kingdom needed a new adviser. I applied for the job, surprisingly I got it. It was the happiest day of my life, I was the king’s personal adviser, finally a chance for me to regain my kingdom….
